How do districts measure
intervention effectiveness?

Most schools run interventions. Few measure whether they work. Here's what closing that loop actually requires - and why the SIS is where it should happen.

Intervention measurement questions, answered.

At minimum, three things: a documented baseline before the intervention, a record of what the intervention was, and a measurable outcome after a defined period. Most schools do the intervention. Few document the baseline. Almost none measure the outcome systematically.

The SIS needs to support all three: capture the student's current data at the moment an intervention is assigned, log the intervention itself, and provide a comparison view showing what changed (or didn't) over the intervention period.

Because the intervention happens in one place and the data lives in another. A counselor assigns tutoring, but the grade data is in the SIS, the attendance data is in a separate module, and the intervention itself was documented in an email or a sticky note. No one connects the three.

Without a closed loop - intervention assigned, baseline captured, outcome measured - schools keep running programs based on intuition rather than evidence. Interventions that don't work continue. Interventions that do work don't get scaled.

The metrics depend on the intervention type, but the most commonly useful are:

  • Grade trajectory change - did the student's grades stabilize, improve, or continue declining after the intervention started?
  • Attendance change - for interventions targeting engagement, did attendance improve?
  • Assignment completion rate - for students receiving academic support, are they submitting more work?
  • Time to effect - how long after the intervention began did measurable change appear?
  • Sustainability - did the improvement persist after the intervention ended?
