Prisma is an innovative online middle school and high school, whose families are a mix of homeschoolers, worldschoolers, and education innovators. Designed for grades 4–12, Prisma combines mastery-based learning, interdisciplinary projects, and a strong emphasis on mentorship and real-world skill development.

“Prisma is the world’s most engaging virtual school that combines a fun, real-world curriculum with powerful mentorship from experienced coaches and a supportive peer community,” says Emily Veno Skolnick, head of learning innovations.

Powering learner storytelling with Alma

At Prisma, assessments look a lot different than traditional grades. Instead of letter scores, learners earn mastery-based badges and receive coach-written narrative feedback – detailed reflections of progress, growth, and purpose.

Alma plays a key role in making this model work. “Alma has been instrumental in supporting our innovative assessment approach,” Veno Skolnick explains. “It seamlessly integrates our coach-written narratives and mastery-based badge system, providing rich, clear transcripts that tell each learner’s unique story.”

Digital creation, real-world application

Beyond Alma, Prisma integrates a range of EdTech tools that empower learners to create with technology and explore topics deeply. Students build websites for businesses, code games, develop digital media projects, and take on entrepreneurial challenges – aligning academic work with practical skills. This project-based model mirrors real-world creative problem solving.

What makes Prisma different?

Prisma offers something most virtual schools don’t: an authentic sense of community and long-term mentorship. Students are placed in small, tight-knit cohorts guided by dedicated coaches who often stay with them for years. This structure fosters trust, continuity, and deeper personal growth.

Prisma also reimagines what learning should look like by focusing on real-world education. That means designing curriculum around today’s biggest challenges and future-ready skills – not standardized test prep.

“At Prisma, one of our learning values is that education should prepare learners for the real world,” says Veno Skolnick.

By combining forward-thinking pedagogy with thoughtful use of technology, Prisma is helping young people develop the skills, confidence, and creativity they need to thrive in life – not just school.
