The conversation about screen time in schools is getting louder, and the data helps explain why. Eighty-eight percent of U.S. public schools now provide individual computing devices to every student. At the same time, 77% prohibit students from using cell phones during class. Nearly three-quarters of school leaders say phones negatively affect student attention spans, while 53% report a negative effect on academic performance.
Those numbers are not contradictory. They show schools beginning to make a more meaningful distinction between technology that supports learning and technology that competes with it. That is a much more useful conversation than simply asking whether students spend too much time looking at screens.
How screens became the default
COVID dramatically accelerated the use of digital technology in education. In spring 2020, nearly 93% of U.S. households with school-age children reported participating in some form of distance learning, and most relied on online resources to continue instruction.
Schools did not make that transition because educators suddenly decided every experience should become digital. They did it because screens became one of the only ways to preserve teaching, communication, and connection during an emergency.
That shift was necessary, but it also changed habits. A global analysis of 46 studies involving more than 29,000 children and adolescents found that average daily screen time increased by 84 minutes during the pandemic, rising from approximately 2.7 hours to 4.1 hours per day.
For older students, the numbers were considerably higher. By 2021, U.S. tweens averaged 5 hours and 33 minutes of entertainment screen use each day, while teens averaged 8 hours and 39 minutes. Those figures did not include time spent using screens for school or homework.
Some of that increase supported instruction, teacher interaction, creativity, and social connection. Some of it replaced sports, clubs, movement, in-person friendships, and the ordinary rhythms of life outside a device. COVID did not create every concern surrounding screen time, but it accelerated a shift from screens as occasional tools to screens as default environments.
Schools now have an opportunity to reconsider which of those habits remain useful.
Screen time is not one thing
Treating every minute on a screen as equivalent oversimplifies the issue. A student using a device to design a model, receive assistive support, collaborate with a classmate, or speak with a teacher is not having the same experience as a student passively scrolling through algorithmically selected content.
A screen can expand access, support creativity, and connect students with resources that would otherwise remain out of reach. It can also fragment attention and displace conversation, movement, handwriting, sleep, play, and sustained thought. The purpose, content, timing, and design of the experience all matter.
The American Academy of Pediatrics encourages families and educators to look beyond a single universal time limit and consider the broader digital environment surrounding a child. Its guidance focuses on the quality and context of media use, the ability to engage and disengage intentionally, and what screen-based activity may be crowding out.
The question should not simply be “how many hours students spend on screens?” But instead: “what did those screens help them accomplish and what are they maybe replacing?”
Technology should earn attention
For years, placing more devices and applications in classrooms often served as evidence of innovation. But more technology is not automatically better technology.

Most public discussions focus on how much time students spend on screens. Far less attention is given to the hours educators and families spend navigating administrative technology.
